Hugo's Story

Saturday 6 August 2022 started like any other Saturday morning for Hugo. A keen rugby player, he was getting dressed to head to the fields. By chance, his mum was talking to her friend (a nurse) that morning and mentioned that she hadn't been getting much sleep, that he was thirsty, going to the toilet several times a night along with other symptoms. The words no mother wants to hear followed 'he has diabetes'. I shrugged off the remark and said I would take him to the doctor on Monday. Five minutes later her husband (a doctor) was at our door with a ketone test strip. Next minute we were at the Emergency Unit at St Vincent's, numerous blood tests confirmed he had T1 Diabetes. Hours away from DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) a potentially life threatening diabetic complication. The next 24 hours was a whirlwind of education, carbohydrate counting, inulin injections, finger pricking tests, doctor consultations and sleepless nights. T1 diabetes prior to this was a disease we knew NOTHING about. Now we were in training to become experts, experts in Hugo's fight for survival, to live a healthy normal life like every 11 year old boy should. We were in flight or fight mode. BGM, CGM, Bolus, Basil, Hypoglycaemia, HbA1c have become our language. We are grateful for the world we live in, the technology that is available, the specialists and the educators provide us with hope that one day Hugo and children like Hugo will live diabetes free.

I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes in Toowoomba!

I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event for families at Queens Park this March!

Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.

T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed with it every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.
