I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes this March!
This March I'm walking 140,000 steps for the 140,000+ Australians living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
Here’s some facts:
- T1D effects roughly 1 in 200 Australians
- T1D effects 3 in 5 Apperley’s
- 90% of people diagnosed with T1D have no family history of it
- Mutations in certain genes predispose an individuals to developing T1D, but ultimately something unknown triggers an attack on the pancreas by the immune system
- T1D only accounts for 10% of all cases of diabetes in Australia
- Roughly 8 people are diagnosed daily within Australia
- However, around 25,000 Australians are in the early stages of T1D and have yet to be diagnosed
- No, you’re not going to get T1D by eating too much junk food
- Yes, I can have cake and ice-cream
My mum was 21 months when she was diagnosed, I was 2.5 years old, 365 days later my brother was diagnosed at 7.
For something that is supposedly random and has no cause, I think it’s fair to say we feel pretty personally victimised by this disease.
Though we may speak about it like it’s no big deal, a world without it is a world I would like to live in.
It may not be much, but any contribution helps chart a path to cure, prevent and better treat T1D and its (many) complications.
