Our lives changed forever thanks Diabetes

As Cyclone Alfred approached northern NSW, schools closed and work shifted back home. During those seven unexpected days, the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes began to appear.

Our 5am kid was still asleep at 8am while his siblings played outside his bedroom door. Instead of his usual energetic self, he lay on the sofa for hours with the dog curled up beside him.

Then came the bedwetting — huge amounts, multiple times a night. Our easy-going kid suddenly had mood swings like a bear woken from hibernation.

Something wasn’t right.

A visit to the paediatrician led to blood tests. That Sunday afternoon the phone rang:

“I believe Nic has diabetes.”

The next day confirmed it. By that evening we were in hospital with blood sugars through the roof.

What followed was a crash course in a life we never expected:

finger pricks, insulin injections, carb counting, midnight blood sugar checks, and learning how to treat dangerous highs and lows.

Ten days later we left hospital and stepped into our new normal.

Because Type 1 diabetes is relentless.

It doesn’t sleep. It doesn’t take a break at school or during sport. Every meal, every activity, every night requires planning and constant monitoring.

Twelve months on, we’ve learned to take each hour as it comes and celebrate the small wins.

But the reality is that 140,000 Australians live with Type 1 diabetes every day, and there is still no cure.

That’s why we’re fundraising.

Every dollar supports research, better treatments and, one day, a cure so kids like Nic can simply be kids again.

I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes this March!

I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event virtually this March! That means I'm walking 140,000 steps from 1-31 March 2026 for the 140,000+ Australians living with T1D.

Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.

T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.

Please support my walk today.
