I'm walking for a world without type one diabetes

Living with T1D

For those who don't know, this year will be 19 years for me living with T1D. I've been injecting insulin multiple times a day since then, trialing insulin pumps and doing literally thousands of insulin injections each year and tracking my blood sugar 24/7 including overnight, at work, on weekends.. I never get a rest day from it. It is invisible yet all-consuming, it requires constant vigilance and there has been no off switch this whole time. I heard someone say recently it's like carrying a newborn with you at all times every day, and that is kind of how it feels; it is the most difficult challenge I've faced and I've not been able to turn the "off switch" for even 5 mins, even at night when you should be able to switch off. I've been hearing it since diagnosis that a cure is only 5 years away, but the idea that a cure could actually be on the cards in the next 5 years brings me so much hope and hopeful relief to almost two decades of monitoring and balancing blood sugar and trying to do the job of an organ at every moment of every day.

Here's an article I wrote for National Diabetes Week, published in The West Australian in 2016 - 10 years ago now!

I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes this March!

I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event virtually this March! That means I'm walking 140,000 steps from 1-31 March 2026 for the 140,000+ Australians living with T1D.

Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.

T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.

Please support my walk today.
