I never imagined Type 1 diabetes would become part of our family’s story, yet here we are... and like so many others, it arrived without warning and turned life upside down overnight.When my son Chris was diagnosed 2 years ago, our world shifted instantly. Life became measured in blood sugar checks, carb counting, insulin doses, alarms, appointments and constant vigilance.
There are no days off from Type 1 diabetes. It doesn’t pause for holidays, birthdays or beach days. It’s always there, quietly demanding attention.
But alongside the challenges came something else too... resilience.
Chris is brave in ways no child should ever have to be. He has learned more about his body, responsibility and strength in his young life than some adults ever do. He wears his devices with pride, lives his life fully, eats the pizza, rides the bike, enjoys beach days and reminds me daily that diabetes may be part of his life, but it will never define him.
As his mum, I’ve learned to live in a constant state of “ON” Always watching. Always planning. Always ready. It’s exhausting, overwhelming and at times incredibly isolating, but it’s also fuelled by a fierce love and an unwavering determination to give him the very best life possible.
That’s why I walk...
I walk for Chris.
I walk for our family.
I walk for every child, parent and loved one navigating this relentless condition.
Last year, I took part in the JDRF T1D One Walk and was incredibly proud to be recognised as one of the top fundraisers.
The support, generosity and kindness shown reminded me just how powerful community can be. This year, I’m back and determined to do it again!
Fundraising matters because research matters. Breakthrough T1D is funding life changing advancements that improve daily management now, while working toward better treatments and ultimately, a cure.
Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to a future where kids like Chris don’t have to live with Type 1 diabetes forever.

I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes in Busselton!
I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event for families at Busselton Beachfront this March!
Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.
T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.Â
