Why i’m walking

Did you know that individuals with type one diabetes make 180 more decisions per day than the average person?

This is my partner Julian and at 19, he got diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, called type one diabetes. 

Julian’s a pretty cool guy who enjoys partaking in activities such as surfing, skiing, bouldering, running and snorkelling. However, he must be organised, otherwise the consequences can be fatal and I must say, i need Julian to be around to massage my feet and carry my bags so it’s a risk we can’t take! 

Before hitting the ski slopes and stomping huge jumps, Julian must carry what we like to call “hypo munchies” to be able to treat low blood sugar in a scarce environment. 

Before every meal, Julian has to inject insulin to maintain his blood levels and compensate for which, formally was his stupid ass pancreas’s role, before it let him down. 

As a diabetic, wanting to eat whatever you want? Wanting even just a snack? Wanting to go out for dinner? Want that drink? Well you better inject, you better carb count, you better track your levels constantly. What are your blood sugar levels? How many carbs are in that? Oh even hearing people say “you can’t eat that”. 

One misconception i know is that type one is that same as type two. Type two usually arises from an unhealthy lifestyle. Julian the most active and healthiest person i know! Type one diabetes is an autoimmune condition, not a lifestyle disorder. 

I’m walking to raise funds to find a cure through cell therapy within the pancreas. It’s time to bling up Julian’s pancreas and tell it who is boss, it’s had it’s rest now and it’s time to work!
