WALKING FOR A WORLD WITHOUT T1D!
Hi I’m Blake,
This March, I’m joining the world’s largest Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) fundraising walk at Burswood Park, and I’m doing it for a reason that’s very close to my heart.
Living with T1D means I don’t ever get a day off. Every single day takes extra time and preparation, packing supplies, checking and rechecking blood sugar levels, planning meals, insulin, and making sure I’m ready for the unexpected. Before school, sport or any activity even starts, there’s already a lot to think about.
Soccer is a huge part of my life, but T1D means training and game days take even more planning. I have to prepare before, during, and after every session, checking levels, managing highs and lows, and adjusting insulin and food so I can play safely. What looks like “just turning up” to soccer actually involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work.
It means making around 180 extra decisions every day just to stay safe and healthy, decisions that most people never have to think about.
T1D can happen to anyone, at any time. In Australia, 8 people are diagnosed every single day, and there is currently no cure.
By taking part in this walk, I’m helping to raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, with the hope that one day Type 1 Diabetes can become Type NONE.
