I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes in Perth!
I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event for families at Burswood Park this March!
Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.
T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.
I was 21 and found myself partially blind and drinking any sugary drink I could .
Dr's did test and told me I had key tones and my sugar levels were dangerously high...I would be known as a Type 1 Diabetic -handed an insulin injection and as I learnt how to inject i was learning life lessons, ones I will forever need.
I have had countless admissions with DKA I have experience 2 comas and I have now had Type 1 for over 21 years?
I am lucky enough to say I now have an in insulin pump that is a complete game changer thanks to technology.
I have always known that at any age any 1 of my 5 children or my grandchildren can have this passed down. I would like to raise awareness and funds for more research and maybe one day close to a cure,
Type 1 Diabetes at any age is no joke it's a lifetime of finger pricks, regular dr visits, carb counting, tummy pricks and a strong mind.
We have sick days ...but they are different to a regular "sick day".
Some nights your sugars dont understand its the middle of the night,or some days your sugars dont understand that you just want to have a good day. It is a daily reminder that not everyone is the same.
Please support my walk today.
