My Story

My Story

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 26 years ago. It’s hard to remember what life was like without diabetes. When I was first diagnosed, I started on insulin injections, drawing insulin from a vial into a syringe. Over time, I moved to insulin pens, taking up to eight injections a day, and for the past 17 years I have been using an insulin pump.

Throughout my career as a Registered Nurse, working predominantly in paediatrics, I have cared for and educated many children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

At the beginning of 2023, our eldest son, Nate, was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He initially started on insulin pens and quickly transitioned to an insulin pump. Both Nate and I now use continuous glucose monitors that connect to our insulin pumps, helping with day-to-day management and making life with diabetes a little easier.

Together, as a family, we are taking on the March Breakthrough T1D One Walk daily challenge of 8,000 steps a day to raise awareness and funds for life-changing research for the eight Australians diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every day.

I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event for families at Hovell Tree Park on the 8th of March 2026!

Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.

T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed with it every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.
