I'm walking for Hailey

A Day in the life of a T1 Diabetic…

Did you know that EVERY single bite of food a T1 diabetic consumes is a carefully calculated math problem? And that’s well in advance of actually eating that food. Hailey needs to work out exactly how many carbs she plans to consume about 30 mins prior to eating. Then she needs to look at her current blood glucose levels and then calculate her insulin injection based on those factors. What happens if she doesn’t eat everything on her plate she thought she would eat? Her blood sugars can drop dangerously low. It’s pretty hard to know exactly how much you’re going to eat 30 mins prior to eating. Sometimes you get full earlier than you thought. Sometimes you don’t actually like the food you prepared. Sometimes the carbs are very hard to calculate (dining at a restaurant for example). What happens if she wants to eat more than she had planned? Another calculation, another injection. We have to weigh food, read labels, plan ahead for every single bite. And plan for when things go wrong.

Hailey is also a coeliac. She has to be incredibly careful not to consume gluten, watch her sugars at all times and still eat enough to stay healthy. She wears a continous glucose monitor attached to her upper arm 24-7, which provides readings every 5 mins. When she’s too high or too low, her monitor alerts her, me AND her sister. Why? Because if one of us sleeps through this alarm in the night, hopefully someone else will wake to it. If we all slept through it…it could be fatal. It’s a scary reality for all families with T1 in the home. When it does go off, it’s an urgent beeping that means she needs to quickly consume fast acting carbs to bring her glucose back up…and also some slower acting carbs to keep her glucose up or she will sugar crash again soon.

A couple months ago, I accidentally fed Hailey something that contained gluten (sleep deprived me here!), which resulted in her being too sick to drink juice or get any carbs into her body. I had to call an ambulance for her. I felt so horrible!!

Life is now constant hospital visits, blood tests, dietitian appts, insulin injections, calculating carbs, sleepless nights, stressful meals, difficult decisions, removing sticky glue off her arm, etc.

People say “at least it’s treatable”.
No…it’s not treatable, YET.
It’s  managed. Very, very carefully because if it’s not, it can result in serious health complications or death.

Research is VERY CLOSE to a cure. Please donate knowing your funds could potentially save Hailey and all other T1 kids/adults from a lifetime of this. As a parent, this truly is heartbreaking to see your child go through this and if there was ANY way it could be me instead, I would do so in a heartbeat!

Please donate. Please share. Thank you 🩷

Thank you!!

Thank you to everyone who has donated! We have hit our milestone goal of raising $500 and will now aim for $1000! We appreciate it very much and it’s going to a very reputable organisation, who has been so helpful to Hailey.  Every little bit helps, even if you can spare $5, we appreciate your support!

I'm walking for a world without type 1 diabetes in Gold Coast!

I'm joining the world's largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) fundraising event for families at Pratten Park this March!

Why? To help raise $1.1 million for life-changing T1D research, and ultimately turn type 1 into type NONE.

T1D can strike anyone at any time, and 8 Australians are diagnosed with it every day. Diagnosis means a 24/7 fight with no break, and facing an extra 180 decisions a day to remain safe and healthy.

Please support my walk today.
